Zenith Radio Corporation - Chigago IL.
Zenith is by far my favorite brand. I collect models mostly from the 1930s. Their beauty, engineering simplicity and great construction makes them a pure joy to work on, look at and listen to. This company strived to differ from the others, while offering models for all budgets (from $20 to $750, as it is often written in their advertising from 1934 to 1938 while they carried the Stratosphere 1000Z in their line-up).

SOLD/VENDUE 1940 Zenith 10-S-470The model 10S470 is one of the most beautiful antique radios ever designed in my opinion. This example is a stellar survivor and I have purchased it for a friend who wanted one nice Zenith. Well, let me tell you I'm a little jealous now. This radio has been previously electronically restored but I will be adding Bluetooth functionnality and giving it a once-over. It is already exceptionnaly sensitive and selective thanks to the built-in tuned antenna.
1939 Zenith 6-S-304
This goofy-looking model is quite hard to find. I was lucky enough to find this one locally in Quebec city. The lady who sold it to me remembered her father listening to it throughout her childhood. I've rebuilt the chassis and it plays well. It's missing the turntable. |
SOLD/VENDUE 1937 Zenith 6-S-128
The 6S128 is an absolutely stunning set by its sheer size, mass and handsome looks. One would normally scoff at a nearly 23-inch tall walnut brick, however the famous ''Big Black Dial'' brings the necessary balance to make this a perfectly proportionate set. The sound is impressive too, you wouldn't expect this to be a table set when you hear it walking in from the hallway. I found this in Sherbrooke, QC and promptly brought it home. It sprung back to life after I glued the tone switch back together. All caps original but one electrolytic can, dated 1945 in pencil. It awaits a proper restoration as it sits now. |
1939 Zenith 6S322
This beautiful set belonged to my friend Michel who's had it for a long time. I've rarely seen such a nicely preserved original finish and being such a rare model from the ''Stars & Stripes'' series, it is quite a conversation starter. I will be holding on to this one for a long time. |
1939 Zenith 5R316
This was my first set of the ''Stars and Stripes'' series. It is absolutely adorable and quite sensitive for its caliber. I've doctored the original finished slightly and cleaned up the knobs. I also installed a brand new grille cloth as well as a clear dial cover from Mark Palmquist, the original one was scratched and yellowed badly. I've also recapped the chassis, cleaned the controls and replaced quite a few resistors. |
1937 Zenith 12U159
This behemoth was sold to me by a friend who found it locally, believe it or not, in Quebec city. He had it refinished although I'm probably going to re-do it once again as I'm not a fan of the products used, which doesn't do justice to the colour and grain of the fancy veneers used in that set. This console is by far the largest I've seen and looks pretty imposing. I've fixed some wiring errors, replaced the tuner grommets with reproductions from http://www.renovatedradios.com/ , I've replaced the tweeter output transformer and 1000V crossover capacitor and finally added a bluetooth module activated at the flip of a switch. This is one of the most powerful radios I've heard. |
1936 Zenith 4V31
This cute little 4-V-31 has been through a few Quebec collectors hands before I adopted it. The original finish is very presentable albeit showing signs of reasonable wear, which makes for its charm. I've restored the chassis neatly but I am missing a vibrator and a 6V source to power it up. |
1938 Zenith 12S265
This one is very special to me. I've always been openly jealous of my dear friend Vincent's 12S265, and in September of 2017 I decided to bite the bullet and post a ''Wanted'' ad on Facebook. My buddy Wilbur Gilroy found this one somewhere in rural Pennsylvania right in time to to sell it to me at the Kutztown XXXVII Radio Show in Kutztown, PA. I spent the next Christmas vacation restoring this thing and threw every possible reproduction part available at it (except for the cloth, personal preference). It is my most played radio and it still brings back excellent memories of that trip, when my friend Patrick and I came back with our biggest Kutztown haul ever. |
SOLD / VENDUE 1938 Zenith 12S265
I sourced and restored this radio for a friend of mine. Now that I've gone over the whole thing, it works even better than my own 12-S-265! |
SOLD/VENDUE 1934 Zenith 288This is a cool ''All-Wave'' set I bought in Kutztown a few years ago. Unfortunately, I'm growing tired of these large table sets, as it is hard to set them anywhere without them looking disproportionate. Nevertheless, an exciting find and an excellent restoration candidate.

1938 Zenith 9S263
This radio sports the same chassis as the 9S262. It is however much harder to find. I absolutely love this one, which my father got for himself after seeing how cool the dial on my 9S262 was! This one is in fantastic shape and one of the most pristeen sets I've seen. Even the chassis doesn't appear to have a single replacement component on it, and that's why I've been putting off the restoration. I think I will be restuffing caps on this one. |
1937 Zenith 8S154
I bought this radio almost right after the 9S262, in 2013. The original finish is almost perfect except for one pronounced wear spot where you can tell the original owner brushed his hand while tuning the radio. I actually love it as it must have taken years of regular use in the same pose to dig so deep in the finish. This was the first radio I ever recapped since the chassis was not too intimidating. It plays OK to this day but I haven't gotten around to rebuilding the multi-section ''Candohm'' resistor and I believe it will need it sooner than later. The original cloth is also torn but I don't have the heart to remove it. |
SOLD / VENDUE 1938 Zenith 9S262
This was my first of many Zeniths! Back in the summer of 2013, I spent all of my money from a small summer gig working as a stand-in for the Opera of Québec city for this gorgeous Robot Dial. It was the first 1938 Zenith I had ever seen in person and had completely fallen in love with it. It was also already restored and working great, sporting a spruced-up original finish. It doesn't get much attention these days but it might be due for a well-deserved overhaul soon. I got my first AM transmitter shortly after purchasing this, and I remember the thrill of FINALLY being able to listen to my own music on this pretty decent set. |
