August 2021 - A Once in a Lifetime Opportunity: Becoming the 2nd Owner of a McMurdo-Silver Masterpiece VI
In August 2021, I was forwarded an unusual email by a fellow S.Q.C.R.A. member. A certain gentleman up in Picton, Ontario, named George Publow, was looking to pass on his father's beloved Masterpiece VI to an appreciative home. After much consideration, I decided to inquire for more details about the set and eventually came up with an offer. Over the following days, George was kind enough to send more pictures, details as well as a quick inspection report from Gord Rabjohn, an Ottawa Vintage Radio Society member. We eventually agreed on a price and set a date for the transaction, which took place on Saturday, September 11th 2021.
His father, George B. Publow (G.B.P.), ordered the set brand new around 1937 and drove all the way to Chicago from Picton, Ontario to pick it up. The gentleman was a member of the Prince Edward Yacht Club and ran a local marina, which means he was extremely busy in the summer fixing boats, selling gasoline and sailing. However, when winter came, he would work on old clocks, tinker with radios and listen to amateur operators (Note : We've actually found several occurences of him partaking in a DXing contests with his Masterpiece VI, such as in the May 1937 edition of Radex).
Needless to say I am thrilled with the opportunity of being the 2nd owner of such an incredible radio, with a lot of background history to boot. Attached are two pictures of my radio dating from the 1930s and 1940s, one featuring G.B.P. himself while he was DXing.

It is now time to start assessing the work that needs to be done in order to get the radio up and running. Prior to my purchase, it was brought up on a variac and could pick up local stations, however the audio was extremely faint. Upon flipping the bottom chassis over, I've begun noticing quite a few changes made to the set, such as the transition to 5U4 rectifier tubes, as well as modifications to the circuitry inside the base of the speaker (addition of a switch and RCA jacks). I plan on reversing these modifications. I believe what happened was that the O.T. failed, and someone tried to figure out a way to retain headphone functionality and the possibility of connecting an external PM speaker, while keeping the field coils in the circuit.
My main concern at the moment is the absence of an audio ouput transformer (T10) inside the bottom chassis, having been substitued by a couple of orange drop capacitors and a couple of resistors.
I am slightly overwhelmed in regards to chosing a replacement for the transformer. For packaging reasons, I think the Hammond 125E might be a good substitute. However it seems a little underrated to me, especially since its frequency range begins at 150Hz.
What would you use (have used) in this set as a substitute O.T. ?
A clear schematic can be found here : https://www.antiqueradios.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=389342
Here is a picture from a few minutes after I unloaded it from the car. As you can see, my bearded colley is quite thrilled with this find :

August 2021 - DeForest-Crosley Drake and Albertan
When is the last time you saw a DeForest-Crosley ''Drake'' and ''Albertan'' sitting pretty inside of a car trunk? Would you believe me if I told you I found both of these for a combined $95CAD? Like I've said in previous posts, 2021 has been a solid, good year.

May 2021 - Sparton 558-B Sleigh
2021 has been good to me, especially in the month of May. I found this Sparton 558-B days after bringing the Equasonne 301 home. I don't think I've ever been so excited driving home from a radio purchase. This will be part of the permanent collection once restored.

Here is a radio you don't see every day. I found this in Saint-Étienne-de-Bolton, near the U.S. border. It had lived most of its life in that old country house. The electronics are complete but have not yet been tested. Please inquire for details.

March 2021 - Emerson BQ-225
Sadly, this cousin to the famous BD-197 ''Mae West'' had to be parted-out due to the insane mouse nest found inside. The coils and wiring had been chewed up beyond all hope. The dial parts and hardware are up for sale.

January 2021 - S.N.R. Excelsior 52
This exceptional French radio was found in Laval, near Montréal. Its original owner was the seller's aunt, who lived in Japan and travelled quite a bit during the 1950s and 1960s. I could never have expected to find one of these as they are just as rare as they are coveted. These were never marketed for North America. Please inquire for more pictures.
November 2020 - 1939 Zenith 6-S-304
The 6S304, though quite goofy-looking, is a very scarce model. I found this one in Quebec city, surprisingly enough. The lady who sold it to me remembers her dad listening to it back in the 1960s. I thought that was pretty neat. I replaced all the capacitors in this radio, rebuilt the candohm, and converted it back to original using a 6X5 tube as a rectifier. The original transformer had been previously replaced probably due to the 6X5 shorting out as they do. The rectifier socket had been rewired to use a 5U4 but I wasn't too happy with the way it looked. The radio plays well although the side-firing speaker is a true disappointment. I guess this was meant to be placed on a nightstand. Unfortunately, the turntable is missing.
November 2020 - 1937 Zenith 6-S-128
This is my latest Marketplace find as of today November 17th. Zenith radios were not sold in Canada after 1932, so it is always a thrill to find one in the wild. Of course, it helps that I found it in Sherbrooke, a city located near the border, with significant American presence in the 1930s. After gluing the tone switch back together, the radio sprung back to life on all but 2 original capacitors.

November 2020 - Restoration completed on the 5-R-316
I've finally completed the restoration of this set, with the replacement of the grille cloth and a fresh, sparkling new dial cover from Mark Palmquist over at dialcover.com
It now sits proudly on top of my 12S265. |
I find it fascinating how many of these Zeniths I find still working OK with most, and in the case of this one, all original capacitors. This radio has of course now been fully recapped and serviced.
|
September 2020 - Crosley Kid's Radio
Through several subsequent trades I found myself owning this novelty for a short period of time. This radio has been gone through and restored by a good friend of mine. It played quite well and looked very cute. In fact it was so small I found myself nearly tripping on it several times. I'm glad I had the chance to look at this rare bird up close.
|
September 2020 - Emerson BU-229 ''Half Mae West''
This was one of those finds I will never forget. My sister and I were out thrifting when we came across this rare set. Emerson radios were never sold here in Quebec and so I was rather puzzled as to how this got here. I ended up trading it for this Zenith 6S322, but the decision was quite tough. At least I know it is in good hands.
August 2020 - Rare Canadian Sparton model 58
Through an online estate sale I ended up paying $50CAD for this very unique Sparton model 58. It is rather small for a console and I don't recall ever seeing another unit like this. It is still unclear to my what the Canadian Sparton company consisted of exactly. Who sold them? Who built the electronics? Who designed the cabinets? The models are always rather funky and often completely different from the more common American versions. I will be freshening-up and selling this set over the winter.

Juillet 2020 - Zenith 5-R-316
I stumbled upon this cute little set when visiting someone's collection and had to have it. Being from 1939, it retains Zenith's beautiful styling cues of the 1930s although it is packaged in a much smaller cabinet, comparable to what became the norm after the war. I freshened the finish up and ordered a new grille cloth and clear dial cover from Mark Oppatt. I also performed a full recap although the radio did play just fine with 100% original 1939 hardware. Impressive!

March 2020 - Buttoning up the Silvertone 4569
I paused on this restoration in 2015 when lack of funds had me discouraged at the destroyed original volume potentiometer and on/off switch.
I was recently inspired to get back into it and had Mark Oppat at oldradioparts.net build a brand new volume control for me, which works wonders. I also found a mistake I had made back in the day. One of the electrolytic capacitors had its negative lead connected to chassis ground! As I found out, this lead was supposed to go to the center tap of the transformer. The radio was much more quiet after this fix and I was glad to get it done. |
March 2020 - New volume and bass controls for the McMurdo-Silver 15-17
After Mark Oppat at oldradioparts.net sent me out the two new custom-built volume and bass controls, I had no excuse to procrastinate more on recapping the 15-17. The rewards were certainly worth it, as this is probably the best sounding radio I've heard yet. This 15'' Jensen A15 speaker does NOT struggle with the higher frequencies as much as I anticipated. In fact, it seems much more balanced than my 12U159 with a tweeter.

February 2020 - 1937 Zenith 12U159 Silent Tweeter Problem Solved
In December I noticed the tweeter on this thing was actually dead quiet. After a little bit of dismantling and measuring I found out one of the windings of the tweeter's own output transformer was open. After a little bit of research and help from Antique Radio Forums user Sofaslug, I found a suitable replacement for it (Hammond 125C). I took the opportunity to replace that 1000V capacitor and voilà. I can now hear what this radio is fully capable of. I might play around with the value of the capacitor in the future and see if I can get more treble that way. Don't mind the modern parts in there, once it's back in the radio, the golden bell covers the whole back of the speaker!

February 2020 - Sending out my two Jensens to get rebuilt
With my 2nd Allwave 15 now in restoration, I decided it was worth getting the speaker professionnaly rebuilt as the cone was warped and torn in several spots. I also had an identical one out of my other Allwave 15 so I drug them both to a local shop I'm told is pretty good. I can't wait to hear what these things sound like!

January 2020 - Recapping the E.H. Scott Allwave 15
I have been busy recapping this Allwave 15 which I got in November.
I have been busy recapping this Allwave 15 which I got in November.
This recap job was tedious at times, requiring to take the shields off of the I.F. coils.
I even found out I had to replace capacitors buried in tar with some R.F. chokes! After a little bit of digging around I managed to get both cases re-stuffed without damaging the chokes. I made sure to apply labels to inform any future repairman about the work done.
December 2019 - Phonola Paragon Rescue
This radio had been advertised for a while and the seller and I just couldn't agree on the price. Right before Christmas we eventually came to a deal and I was very happy to finally test out my recently purchased new little radio-hauler! The radio fit in perfectly and I got it home. After a quick recap and some speaker repairs, this thing turned out to be quite the performer! It is NOT my usual style of radios but I thought it just looked so beautiful with the slight feathering around the edges and the pillar grille. When I got to the seller's place and turned the radio around I was pleased to see two speakers in there and a push-pull 6V6 output section in what appeared to be a very well-built chassis.
|
I gave the radio a re-cap and cleaned the chassis thoroughly. The smaller speaker also required me to re-glue the spider as it was rattlig bad. It turned out to be quite a performer! This picture was taken before I cleaned the dial, but with a fresh 6E5 Magic Eye and the dial cleaned-up, I'll tell you this one has quite the look. I've definitely put it on the keepers list for now. It used to belong to the seller's uncle, who was a priest. I'm technically the 3rd owner, since the seller inherited it at her uncle's death, but I'm the second family this radio's ever been in. I find that quite special, and the radio clearly looks like it was loved its whole life. I sent a quick video of it playing to the seller the night I bought it and they simply replied ''Thanks!''. My work was done.

The most gorgeous radio in my collection, a model I had been seeking since the very beginning of my radio collecting.

You're looking at my last acquisition! This is a Stromberg Carlson from 1941, featuring a 16 tube chassis, with FM, AM and two shortwave bands. This is my first pre-war FM radio. I bought it from the original owner's family, which is, you must admit, a plus.

This little five-tuber is fantastic! The finish is in overall great condition, and the seller's tag still looks as good as new. I hope to get the radio going in the next few months. The chassis looks complete and in good condition.

A new cool flea market find. I usually don't look for european radios because they are very expensive but this one had a pretty fair price. It's in very good condition. Clean chassis, clean cabinet with a very good finish, and having only one non-original knob.

1936 Marconi 73
I recently bought this 1936 Marconi Tombstone radio. It's really nice!
Has a cool dial, good original finish and a complete chassis. The only bad point is the missing speaker. I sure can find one that fits, but finding an original Marconi one would be very surprising...
